Welcome to Southport Christian Church!

Let us introduce ourselves through our introduction video.

We are committed to serving from our doorsteps "to the ends of the Earth", sharing the good news of God's saving love, and making and growing disciples of Jesus Christ. We invite you to join us on your faith journey.

About Us

In the mid 1950's Olive Branch Christian Church located on Raymond Street in Indianapolis experienced a steady increase in attendance and crowded conditions in the Education Department. With many members residing on the south side of Indianapolis, the decision was made to locate a new church in the Southport area.

On Sunday, January 5, 1958, Southport Christian Church held its first unified worship service at Burkhart Elementary School. On January 17, 1960, the Fellowship Hall was dedicated followed by the sanctuary on April 20, 1975.

Southport ranks among the top 100 largest Disciple congregations and is known for its creative ministries, denominational and regional leadership, strong programming and generous outreach giving.

Our Denominational Ties

We are a part of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). More information can be found through the international web site or through the Christian Church in Indiana.

Our Worship Practices

Communion

The Lord's Supper is celebrated weekly. All who believe in Jesus Christ are invited to participate. Learn more about Communion >

Freedom of Belief

Disciples are called together around one essential of faith: belief in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Persons are free to follow their consciences guided by the Bible, the Holy Spirit, study and prayer, and are expected to extend that freedom to others.

Baptism by Immersion

In baptism the old self-centered life is set aside, and a new life of trust in God begins. Although Disciples practice baptism by immersion, other baptism traditions are honored. Learn more about Baptism >

The Ministry of All Believers

Both ministers and lay persons lead in worship, service and spiritual growth.

Our Beliefs

  • Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God, and we proclaim him Lord and Savior of the world.
  • In Christ's name and by his grace we accept our mission of witness and service to all people.
  • We rejoice in God, maker of heaven and earth, and in the covenant of love which binds us to God and one another.
  • Through baptism into Christ we enter into newness of life and are made one with the whole people of God.
  • In the communion of the Holy Spirit we are joined together in discipleship and in obedience to Christ.
  • All Christians are called to be one in Christ and to seek opportunities for service.
